Social Media Associate

Cambridge, MA

MIT Technology Review is looking for a social media associate to help its esteemed science and technology journalism reach more people. The social media associate will create and publish MITTR editorial and event content on digital platforms beyond the website, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and others.

As social media associate, you will work for the Platforms and Growth Editor with input from the Director of Audience Development to fulfill our social media strategy and growth metrics. You will spend the majority of your time producing and publishing content for social channels; executing and iterating on growth strategies; monitoring social media accounts for news and community involvement; and working on social media promotion and live coverage of MITTR events like the EmTech conferences in different locations.

Responsibilities include producing video, images, and GIFs; experimenting with emerging platform content; sharing best practices with colleagues for crafting headlines and social content; responding to social inquiries and comments; and moderating discussions. The social media producer will work in collaboration with colleagues across all divisions of the company, including marketing, events, sales, and product development, to help ensure that MITTR’s voice on all off-platform communication is consistent with the brand while being appropriate to each platform.

The ideal candidate will have 1+ years of experience in social media content development, preferably in a newsroom and with a focus on technology or science. You have demonstrated judgment and headline writing skills, with the ability to present the most interesting aspect of a news story. You also have strong copy-editing skills; understand journalistic ethics, standards, and fairness; and are able to meet deadlines and handle multiple projects simultaneously. You are proactive, organized, and accurate, with the ability to sometimes work varied shifts based on the news cycle. A BS in journalism, technology, or the equivalent is preferred, as is experience with multimedia production.
